This week, you may see some new faces pop up on our website and social media feed. The clinicians at Active are celebrating Balance Awareness Week! Balance is a very important part of our lives, and often something that many of us take for granted. Imagine what life would life would be like if you were unable to keep your balance on a daily basis. Your risk for falling would increase, and you would likely start to avoid certain activities in order to avoid feelings of imbalance or dizziness.
Active Marquette’s Jeanette Tousignant enjoys helping patients with vestibular disorders, and has nearly 30 years experience doing so.
“Imbalance, dizziness, vertigo, etc. can be extremely life-altering,” says Tousignant. “But it does not have to be the norm. Our balance system was designed to work efficiently for us, so that we are not overcome by gravity. If our system is not responding faster than gravity, falls can prevent a serious risk for injury, especially as we age.”
Here at Active, we have Physical Therapists who treat a wide variety of balance and dizziness problems. It’s our mission help our community realize that you don’t have to put up with feelings of dizziness and imbalance! We are here to help! That’s why we’re celebrating with the Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA) by participating in their annual Balance Awareness Week!
Ishpeming Physical Therapists Sarah Goupil and Kristy Kerkela agree that vestibular rehab can be a very fun and rewarding experience.
“Our balance system (the vestibular system) is incredibly complex, involving the eyes, ears, brain and joints working together. It requires exceptional precision to coordinate all of these systems every second. We have special tests to determine which part may not be working as well. And the rehabilitation can be really fun!”
If your life has been affected by dizziness, and you have a story to tell, feel free to join us! You can find ways to get involved by going to their website: www.vestibular.org. You can even enter a contest to win a pair of KEEN shoes (value of $200!)
